JOYCE FALCONER, ACTOR

MY SCHOOL:

I have lived in Glasgow for 30 years but I went to school in Torry in Aberdeen where I grew up.

I went to Tullos Primary then Torry Academy, which is sadly being demolished, after closing last year, to amalgamate with two others to make a big new school.

Both were in walking distance of my house.

Everyone walked. I don’t remember a single person being dropped off in a car.

FAVOURITE TEACHER:

We had lots of really colourful teachers. They were referred to as ‘the mannie this’ or ‘the wifie that’.

All had nicknames - Biffo, Cyclops, Penguin, Bullseyes, Caveman and Hairy Mary were the most memorable.

I was part of the last generation to get corporal punishment before it was stopped in 1984.

We called it ‘The Scud’. I was given it a few times, mainly for showing off and once for impersonating my French teacher.

One of my favourite teachers was my physics teacher, the mannie Dalglish.

He made physics seem so easy in the way that he explained it all, and I loved the fact he always asked, ‘All reasonably happy?’ before moving on.

He was courting the music teacher, whose first name was Jenny.

We’d all chant ‘Jenny, Jenny, Jenny Daglish’ outside the science lab when she visited him at break.

FAVOURITE SUBJECT:

I loved school - the music rooms were my favourite place.

BEST FRIEND AT SCHOOL?

Me and my friends Michele and Nicola used to head to the music rooms to make up wee concertinas for the local pensioners.

We have remained close friends and all of us celebrated our 50th birthdays this year.

SCHOOL DINNER, PACKED LUNCH OR HOME?

I always went home for dinner.

My Ma always had a fine big pot of food for us all and a pudding - maybe semolina or sago with a tin of fruit.

When it was PE we sometimes had to do cross country runs down the fields beside our scheme.

Me and my pals would nip into my house and get some home baking to keep us going.

IF I COULD CHANGE ONE THING ....

I loved school so I wouldn’t really change anything.

My only regret is that I never kept a journal of all the characters, laughs and incidents that took place during my time there.
