Hundreds of demonstrators are expected to descend on Glasgow's Buchanan Street steps today in protest of any potential war with Iran.

Tensions have been brewing since the US killing of Iran's top military general Qasem Soleimani on Friday.

US President Donald Trump has threatened to attack dozens of targets if Iran retaliates, while officials in the Iranian capital of Tehran have been describing Trump as a "terrorist in a suit".

Now, a group called Glasgow Stop the War Coalition has condemned the escalations, calling on the British Government to "publicly oppose any military action against Iran."

They are planning a demonstration on the city's Buchanan Street at 5.30pm.

So far around 150 people have confirmed they are "going", with 400 more "interested" in attending the event.

A description for the protest reads: "The assassination of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani is an act of war by Donald Trump. The act was carried out in Baghdad, violating all agreements with the Iraqi government.

"Both Iran and Iraq are likely to retaliate.

"Trump has been heading for war since tearing up the nuclear deal with Iran in May 2018 and if he succeeds he will create the biggest war we have ever seen in the Middle East.

"It could draw in major powers across the region including Israel, Saudi Arabia and possibly Russia.
