Protest held in Buchanan Street calling for no war with Iran

More than 100 people gathered at the steps of Buchanan Street to make their voices calling for peace heard.

Tensions have been brewing since the US killing of Iran's top military general Qasem Soleimani on Friday.

US President Donald Trump has threatened to attack dozens of targets if Iran retaliates, while officials in the Iranian capital of Tehran have been describing Trump as a "terrorist in a suit".

Tonight, Glasgow Stop the War Coalition condemned the escalations, calling on the British Government to 'publicly oppose any military action against Iran'.

Among the speakers at the public rally was Labour MSP Pauline McNeill.

She said: "We must stand together. We must demand from our government that we must separate our position out against the American position because it can only lead to danger.

"As we stand here, many Iranians are standing in their own streets and they are demanding action against the West, it could not be more dangerous."

Angela Rae, 60, from Clydebank, was among the many attending the protest.

She said: "We want peace in the world, we do not want violence. We have got to fight for our kid's future."

Jake Stevenson, 18, from Larkhall, added: "I am here as a pacifist. I don't believe in war. I don't believe in military violence and I don't believe in America's attempt to cause military intervention to Iran or any of the other Middle Eastern countries that they have done before."
