A severe crash in the Springboig area left an officer trapped inside a police vehicle on Monday evening. 

The two-vehicle crash on Edinburgh Road involved a police vehicle and a white Ford Ka council care service car. 

It took place at 8.15pm on January 20, the police vehicle was responding to a 999 call before the collision. 

Firefighters were forced to cut the roof off the Police Scotland car to help free the two officers.

The driver of the police car was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary Hospital with serious injuries. His colleague and the woman driving the Ford Ka were also taken to hospital as a precaution. 

Eye-witnesses reported the officer was still trapped in the vehicle at 9pm. 

The Glasgow City Council care service car was badly damaged in the accident.

Three Scottish Fire and Rescue Service appliances were in attendance.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said:  “Around 8.15pm on Monday, January 20, a marked police car responding to a call was involved in a crash with a white Ford Ka in Edinburgh Road, Glasgow, at the junction with Springboig Road.

“Two officers were injured. The driver of the police car was taken by ambulance to Glasgow Royal Infirmary with serious injuries.

"His colleague, who was in the passenger seat, was also taken to hospital as a precaution and later released.

“The woman driver of the Ka was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary by the Scottish Ambulance Service as a precaution.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of what happened. Anyone who has any information to help with our inquiries, including dash-cam footage, should contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident 3311 of Monday, January 20.”

Police diversion were put in place as emergency services attended to the accident and Edinburgh Road remained closed at Stepps Road until 6.52am on Tuesday morning.
