Two women were rushed to hospital after being hit by part of a shop sign in Glasgow city centre. 

The sign from the Marks and Spencer on Argyle Street is thought to have come loose around 3pm due to severe gusts of wind. 

Both women were taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

Police have cordoned off the area and the main entrance to the Argyle Street train station was closed. 

Scotrail is advising travellers to use the Osborne Street entrance to the station. 

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: "We were made aware at 3pm on Friday afternoon after two female pedestrians were struck by signage that appears to have fallen from storefront on Argyle Street.

"Both ladies have been taken by ambulance to Glasgow Royal Infirmary. The Health and Safety Executive has been informed."

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman added: "We received a call at 2.55pm to attend an incident on Argyle Street in Glasgow.

"We dispatched one ambulance crew to the scene."

An M&S spokeswoman said: "Extreme weather caused an incident outside our Glasgow Argyle Street store this afternoon.

"We're grateful to the emergency services for responding so efficiently.

"Our engineers have ensured the surrounding area is safe and our store remains open."

Winds are expected to continue to cause disruptions tomorrow. 

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for which is set to remain in place until Saturday evening, warning of "strong gusty winds".
