One of Glasgow's much-loved restaurants has vowed to go beyond the call of duty to help anyone from the city who gets hit by the coronavirus.

Bosses at the West End restaurant the Shish Mahal – which claims to have invented the chicken tikka masala – have promised to deliver a curry every night for two weeks for anyone who has to self-isolate in response to the deadly COVID-19.

As of 2pm yesterday, 816 people had been tested for the virus in Scotland.

Only one of them was a confirmed case – which was revealed on Sunday night.

That patient, from Tayside, is now in hospital in isolation after returning from Italy.

Elsewhere, the total number of confirmed UK cases is 40 - but both First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and Prime Minister Boris Johnson say a significant outbreak is to be expected.

Speaking to LBC News, Shish Mahal owner Asif Ali said: "If, and we hope it doesn't happen, the coronavirus does come to Glasgow and affects one of our customers, they'll obviously have to self-isolate themselves, so for two weeks, we will deliver them a curry just to cheer them up.

"It's something to give back to our customers.

"Chicken tikka masala was invented by the Shish Mahal – so they can have that or any curry of their choice."

He added: "In Glasgow we're a hardy bunch and we just get on with it.

"People will go out, people will still eat, people will still drink.

"Glaswegians don't worry much and they just get on with their lives.

"What happens they'll deal with it."

Globally more than 88,000 cases of coronavirus have been confirmed, with more than 3,000 deaths.
