A COMMUNITY has come together to launch an initiative which will help some of its more vulnerable residents.

Brighter Baillieston Food Aid was launched earlier this month and has so far raised more than £1,000 to help those in need in Baillieston, Garrowhill, Swinton and Broomhouse.

The project is an off-shot of Brighter Baillieston which organised last year’s Christmas lights switch-on.

The volunteers behind the initiative said: “As as much as we will do our best to help we need this to be a community project everyone can get behind and help out.

“Help can come in many different forms - volunteering, food/essential donations or help with our GoFundMe.

“I’d just like to add vulnerability comes in many different forms during this period - physically, mentally, financially and lack of support so no judging anyone as you don’t know their circumstances.

“All packages will be discreetly delivered and only people delivering will know.”

The project set up trollies in Iceland in Baillieston and Co-op in Barrachnie which is now accepting donations.

Some of the donations they hope to receive include tinned soup, beans, macaroni, vegetables, tuna, pasta, rice, noodles, mug shots/cup a soup, cereals, savouries, crackers, oat cakes, washing up liquid, soap, kitchen roll, toilet roll, cleaning products, tea bags, coffee, sugar, UHT milk and toiletries.

Businesses including Chapman Butchers, Londis Solo Convenience Store, Morrisons and McVities have donated to the effort.

While a GoFundMe page has raised more than £1,300 so far with locals urged to continue to donate.

Anyone who wishes to request help from the service or volunteer can call 07545 378 754 between 11 am and 6 pm. You can also send a text requesting a parcel.
