A MAN has told the terrifying story of how his car was smashed after rescuing a young boy from an attack by a gang of youths.

Kevin Currie, 29, was in Nisa on Cumbernauld Road when a 16-year-old boy ran into the shop pursued by a gang of youths brandishing a wheel wrench.

He said the boy had gotten into a fight with the gang, who had pushed him off his bike and attacked him.

The boy then reportedly ran into the Nisa shop looking for help when Kevin, whose company Road Runner Deliveries works with the store, intervened.

He saw off the gang and offered to give the boy a lift home. En route, the two stopped to collect the boy’s bike from Sannox Gardens.

Kevin says he saw the gang of boys in the process of stealing the bike.

He got out of his car and approached the group.

Kevin said: “When we approached Sannox Gardens, I saw these boys putting his bike in the back of their car.

“Without thinking, I got out of the car to stop them from taking the boy’s bike.

“I ran towards them and they took the bike out of the car and started brandishing it - like they were trying to use it as a weapon.”

He went on: “One of the boys then got out the wheel wrench and started trying to attack me with it.

“I’m assuming because they were angry I didn’t let them get away with the bike they then turned on my car and smashed it with the wheel wrench.”

The attack took place in Dennistoun, near Alexandra Park on Monday, April 13.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “We received a report of an assault of a 16-year-old male and a car being vandalised in the Alexandra Park area of Glasgow. The incident was reported to police shortly after 5.05pm on Monday, 13 April, 2020 and enquiries are ongoing.”

Kevin said he felt compelled to help the young boy, having had a “bit of a history” himself.

He founded Road Runner Deliveries to help people get back on track and to launch a delivery service to take on competitors such as Deliveroo and Uber Eats.

Local SNP councillor Allan Casey said: “This type of incident is extremely concerning especially given the current circumstances around the coronavirus pandemic. This incident would not have taken place if the group of youths had been followed the government guidance and they clearly have no regard for public safety. It is one of a number of incidents that have taken place in Dennistoun over the last couple of weeks during the current lockdown and I would urge everyone to please follow the government guidelines.

“I understand Police Scotland are aware of this incident and I will continue to work with the Police problem solving team, the local housing association and other stakeholders to bring this reckless behaviour to a halt. I would ask if anyone has any information on this incident to report it directly to the police on 101.”
