DETAILS of coronavirus deaths in the city of Glasgow have been revealed for the first time.

It shows that there have been 71 deaths in care homes in the city since the outbreak started.

In total 246 people have died from coronavirus in Glasgow with 161 of them in hospital.

Another 14 people have died while at home.

The latest figures show Glasgow as the most affected council area in Scotland.

Previously only health board area statistics were available, which covered Greater Glasogw and Clyde NHS area.

Glasgow city has 100 more deaths than Edinburgh but just two more deaths in care homes than the capital.

The latest figures show that there have been 1616 deaths in Scotland where coronavirus is listed on the death certificate up from 965 last week.

The figures are from the National Records of Scotland which include all death registrations, whereas the daily figures announced by the First Minister are for those in hospital where there has been appositive coronavirus test.

Numbers are still rising.

National Records of Scotland said; “Between 13th April to 19th April, 651 deaths relating to COVID-19 have been registered, up from 610 deaths in the previous week, 6th April to 12th April.”

A third of all registered deaths involving COVID-19 occurred in care homes. 56% of registered deaths were in hospitals and 10% were at home or non-institutional settings.

Almost three quarters of all registered deaths involving COVID -19 to date were people aged 75 or over. Of all deaths to date involving COVID-19, 55% were male and 45% were female.

Pete Whitehouse, Director of Statistical Services, said:“Every death from this virus is a tragedy. These statistics, alongside the other important evidence being made available by the Scottish Government and Health Protection Scotland (HPS), are valuable to the understanding of the progress and impact of the COVID-19 virus across Scotland.”
