A loyalist group has vowed to protect a Glasgow war memorial from vandalism after statues across the UK have been graffitied.

The Loyalist Defence League is urging people to gather on George Square from 12pm today to protect the Cenotaph.

On Friday, a statue of Robert the Bruce near Stirling was the latest to be targeted by vandals calling for its removal.

Last weekend, the London Cenotaph, the UK's official national war memorial, was defaced by protesters with graffiti.

The George Square Cenotaph pays tribute to Glaswegians who fought and died in both world wars.

The Glasgow Times reported earlier this week that police will be patrolling statues this weekend amid threats of vandalism.

Several statues across Glasgow were vandalised last weekend after a Black Lives Matter protest took place in the Glasgow Green.

The official Government guidance remains to avoid mass gatherings to prevent a rise in Covid-19 cases.

Five statues in Glasgow were featured on an online list 'topple the racists' calling for the removal of certain historical figures.

The website, however, says it does not want the statues actively torn down but instead wishes to promote debate.
