Police have confirmed a gathering in George Square which took place on Saturday was mainly 'peaceful'.

A heavy police presence was seen at the event organised by Loyalist group, Loyalist Defence League (LDL), which invited their supporters to "protect" the Glasgow Cenotaph from vandalism.

Another gathering is planned for Sunday at 12pm with flyers calling to 'oppose the BLM and Antifa protest'.

More than a hundred people filled the square during Saturday's event which took place from 12pm.

Multiple riot vans were spotted near the city centre event on both Ingram Street and Brunswick Street.

A spokesman for the force confirmed to the Glasgow Times that the vehicles were there as part of the response to the George Square event on Saturday.

He confirmed that the event, like other events which took place in Edinburgh and Aberdeen, had seen no trouble or disturbance.

However, officials still expressed disappointment at the mass gatherings which took place across Scotland due to risks of spreading Covid-19.

ACC Kenny MacDonald said: "I am disappointed that some people chose to ignore the advice and attended a number of events across Scotland.

"However, for those who did attend, I would like to thank you for conducting your protest in a peaceful manner.

"An appropriate policing response was put in place for the events and these passed without significant incident.

“We would encourage everyone to continue to follow the Scottish Government's regulations and guidance to aid the collective effort to protect the NHS and save lives by preventing the virus from spreading."
