A FENCE surrounding a Garrowhill school has been described as “horrific” and an “accident waiting to happen”.
Calls are being made for “long overdue” repairs on the barrier outside St Bridget’s Primary, on Camp Road, before someone gets hurt.
Mum-of-two Lynn Rafferty is among those demanding action is taken on the fence, saying she is concerned a child could be injured when schools return next month.
It’s understood repair work was carried out by Glasgow City Council last month, but Ms Rafferty says this has not improved things.
Ms Rafferty, who lives on Greenshields Road, said: “I live right next to the fence and it is horrific.
“The rust on it is so bad that a child could easily hurt themselves even if they just run their finger down it.
“I went to the school myself and it was bad then. It’s the same, if not worse, now.
“There have been some terrible injuries over the years and it’s likely to happen again.”
Ms Rafferty, 37, who raised the issue with local MP David Linden, says she intends to start a petition among parents when children are back at school.
The Glasgow East man said: "We [Mr Linden and his caseworkers] are in contact with the local authority on a regular basis. At the moment, it is taking quite a long time to get a response and that can be frustrating.
"But, we are hopeful of helping Ms Rafferty pursue it and get a resolution for it."
Councillor Phillip Charles, who represents the school as part of his Baillieston remit, said: “I don’t think that’s a good condition for a fence to be in, especially as we are nearing the time when schools will be going back.
“The fact is it sounds like the council just did some patch work.
“Hopefully we can get something done which is important as we are trying to get back to a sense of normality.”
A council spokeswoman said: “During lockdown routine maintenance of schools was put on hold as work was not allowed to be carried out.
“Work on the school estate has now resumed as the guidance has been updated and in time for a return to school in the new term in August.”
