Pizza Express will be closing 73 of its UK restaurants - including one of its outlets in Glasgow.

The move, which will help reduce its restaurant and rental costs, could see a possible loss of 1,100 jobs.

Its outlet in Princes Square, Glasgow is among those that face permanent closure.

The pizza chain also has outlets in Queen Street, Byres Road and Silverburn Centre.

Citing the pandemic as a major reason for decision finalised in a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA), earnings have also been in decline for the past three years.

Zoe Bowley, Pizza Express's managing director for the UK and Ireland, said: "Unfortunately, the impact of the global pandemic has meant that we have had to make some incredibly tough decisions to safeguard Pizza Express for the long term."

Ms Bowley said that in most cases, the stores selected for closure are near to another Pizza Express that has already reopened or will be reopening soon.

The decision will protect jobs of over 9,000 staff members, she added.

Other outlets closing in Glasgow include Aberdeen (Belmont Street) and Edinburgh (Holyrood).
