Bannerman High School has announced it is now "actively encouraging" members of staff and pupils to wear face coverings within the premises.

It comes shortly after a coronavirus cluster was identified at the Baillieston school where nine pupils are so far confirmed to have the virus.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde's Test and Trace team have been working to identify contacts close to the pupils, who are now self-isolating.

The health board confirmed that there is currently no evidence the transmission occurred within the school but instead took place at indoor gatherings.

A mother of a pupil at the school earlier told Radio Clyde News she is now refusing to send her son back as she fears pupils are being "used as guinea pigs".

Sharon, whose son is in S1, told the radio station: "I feel our kids are getting used as guinea pigs if I'm totally honest with you. First the elderly in care homes and now they're doing it with kids in schools.

"He is very anxious, he's got autism and he's worried about him catching it and bringing it home to mum and his big brother.

"He's telling me he's not going back until it's absolutely cleared.

"He's wanting answers as well, he's wanting to know what the next stage is. I'm not from that area, so my son is travelling into a different area and then coming home again."

The East End school earlier announced: "We are promoting the wearing of face coverings in school.

"Everyone has been welcome to use one whenever they wish, but we are now actively encouraging them.

"We are especially encouraging our senior pupils and especially when they are moving around the school #responsibility."

A Glasgow City Council spokeswoman said: "This is something that's covered in the Scottish Government's return to schools guidance and the school are encouraging the use of face coverings where social distancing of 2 metres is not possible.”
