A pupil at a school in the West End has tested positive for COVID-19.

The Glasgow Academy confirmed it is aware of one positive test within its vicinity.

The West End school has now begun the Test and Protect procedure, where any contacts close to the pupil will be identified and asked to self-isolate for two weeks.

There is currently no indication of any in-school transmission of the virus.

A spokesman for The Glasgow Academy said: “We are aware of one positive test in our community.

"The route of transmission is outside of the school community and Test and Protect procedures are underway. There is currently no indication of any in-school transmission.

“Our responsibilities as a school are to use the Test and Protect process and work closely with our local Health Protection Team to help manage any outbreak and to break chains of transmission of COVID-19 in the community.”

Meanwhile, another eight schools within the Greater Glasgow and Clyde health board have begun contact tracing.

Dr Linda de Caestecker, director of public health, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, added: “To control the spread of the virus it is essential that anyone contacted by test and protect follows the directions given including self-isolation.

"Anyone who may have been exposed is being given appropriate advice.

“We would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the importance of continuing with the general measures to minimise the risk of Covid-19 to themselves and to others.

"These include social distancing, regular handwashing, and being vigilant for symptoms. Anyone with symptoms should immediately self-isolate and seek a test.”
