A caravan went up in flames at an Ayrshire holiday park popular with Glaswegians. 

Emergency services raced to Sandylands Holiday Park after the vehicle was torched around 7pm on Sunday. 

Nobody was injured in the fire and officers launched an investigation into the incident.

A 19-year-old has been charged in connection with the blaze.

Three fire appliances were at the scene at the height of the incident after dark smoke engulfed the area. 

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were called to the incident around 7.04pm. 

Two caravans in the park were damaged. 

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "Police Scotland can confirm that a 19-year old man has been charged in connection with a fire at Sandylands Caravan Park in Stevenston on Sunday August 23.

"Two caravans were damaged but no-one was injured.  A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal."

A spokesperson for Sandylands Holiday Park said:“There was a suspected arson attack on an unused caravan on Sunday night. We’re proud of our team on park, who responded quickly, ensuring that nobody was hurt, and helping the police to apprehend the suspect. We’re thankful to the fire service for their swift response in tackling the fire, and can reassure owners and holidaymakers that it’s business as usual again at the park now.”
