Sighthill-born Douglas Stuart's first novel, Shuggie Bain, has proved a literary sensation after winning the Booker prize this year and now Hollywood want to get in on the action. 

The indie film studio A24 and Scott Rudin Productions have secured the rights to bring Shuggie Bain to the small screen, reports Variety.

The book follows the life of a sensitive boy growing up in poverty and his relationship with his alcoholic mother in 1980s Glasgow. 

A24 are best known for their big-screen hits including last year's Midsommar and the tense Adam Sandler thriller Uncut Gems. 

Now Douglas Stuart has sold the rights to make his debut novel into a TV show and said he hopes to show the "spirit of Glasgow" to the world". 

In a statement, the New York-based writer said: "I am thrilled to be partnering with A24 and Scott Rudin Productions in bringing ‘Shuggie Bain’ to the screen. 

"I often thought of the book in cinematic terms, and the glamourous, calamitous Agnes Bain certainly believes herself to be the star of her own movie.

"This is a chance to show the city of Glasgow with all her tenacity and unsinkable spirit, and to celebrate the love and hope between Shuggie and Agnes.”

In a joint statement, seen by the site, the two studios said: “Douglas Stuart is an incredibly talented and sophisticated writer, capturing his world and characters with the kind of authenticity, rhythm, vivid detail, and heartbreaking emotion that you rarely see in any book, let alone a debut novel.

"We are so excited to work with him to tell this powerful and deeply moving story in a new way.”
