CRUEL Christmas Day crooks broke into a car in Dumbarton and made-off with "several items". 

Cops have issued a warning after a motor was targeted on Meadowbank Street in the town last week. 

They say the vehicle was broken into at some point between 7.30pm on Friday and 11pm on Saturday.

Officers in West Dunbartonshire have urged residents to be vigilant and have issued the following advice: 

  • Lock all items out of sight. Don’t leave anything on display and take valuables with you.
  • Leave the glove box empty and open.
  • If you have a Sat Nav, hide the cradle and take the system with you. Don’t forget to wipe the suction marks off the window.
  • If you have personal correspondence in the vehicle, the take it with you. Don’t give others access to important personal information or your home address.
  • Use an electronic or mechanical immobiliser such as a steering lock.
  • If you have an alarm then make sure it’s set.
  • MLA approved locksmiths can help with vehicle keys and locks if required.

A force spokesman said: "We are aware individuals may have gifts within their car given the time of year and we would strongly encourage you to remove such items from your vehicle or ensure they are out of sight.

"If you do witness any suspicious behaviour, always contact Police on 101 or 999 in an emergency."
