Coronavirus cases in Glasgow showed an increase in the week up to Christmas Day.

For the seven days up to and including December 25 there were 1032 positive tested cases of the virus recorded across the city.

It was an increase of 10% on the previous seven-day period when the number had reduced over a few weeks to 935.

It meant the rate of positive cases per 100,000 of population, a key indicator used by the Government for deciding on lockdown restrictions increased from 147.7 to 163.0 in a week.

The test positivity rate, another measure, which calculated the percentage of people positive from the number of tests carried out remained similar, increasing slightly from 6.2% of all tests to 6.6%.

Glasgow, along with the whole of mainland Scotland entered level 4 lockdown the day after the latest weekly statistics in a bid to prevent the new variant of Covid-19 from spreading throughout the country.

Glasgow had a higher rate per 100,000 of population than the Scottish figure, which was 129.

The city however was lower than some other cities and council areas.

Aberdeen City and Dundee were both higher at 166 per 100,000 each. While north and South Lanarkshire were also higher at 166 and 168, respectively.

Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire were also higher at 179 and 164 respectively.

East and West Dunbartonshire were lower than Glasgow at 121 and 124 respectively.

The area in Glasgow with the highest number of positive tested cases in the week up to Christmas was Darnley West with 38 positive cases reported.

It had a positivity rate of higher than 400 per 100,000.

The other highest areas were Darnley North, with 19 and Carnwadric West with 18. The here highest areas are shown as the darkest shade of purple on the map.

City Centre East had 34 cases but is ranked lowest because it has a much higher population.

It is shown as the second darkest shade on the map, one of 35 areas in Glasgow where the positivity rate is between 200 and 399 per 100,000 population.

Other in that category with higher cases included Toryglen and Oatlands with 26, Possilpark, 18 Pollok North and East, 18 and Robroyston and Millerston on 17.

At the other end of the spectrum there were 19 areas were the number of cases was either zero, one or two, shown as white on the map.

In these areas the virus is considered to be suppressed during that period.

The areas were Anderston, Anniesland East, Barmulloch, Carmyle and Mount Vernon South, Dowanhill, Drumchapel South, Drumry East, Gallowgate North and Bellgrove, Ibrox, Kingston West and Dumbreck, Knightswood Park East, Maryhill East, Sighthill, Summerston North, Victoria Park, Whiteinch, Wyndford, Yoker North and Yoker South.

Another 21 area had a low rate, of between 50 and 99 cases per 100,000 population, shown as grey on the map.

The highest number of areas in the city fell onto the category of 100 to 199 cases per 100,000. There were 57 of them shown as lilac on the map.

More than 50 of those were in single figures, and the highest in the at category were Parkhead West and Barrowfield and Ruchill, both on 14, Hillhead with 13 and Bailieston east with 11.

Meanwhile Nicola Sturgeon has reminded people not to gather outwith their household on Hogmanay.

The First Minister said it is vital to follow the rules in order to suppress the new strain of Covid-19, which is thought to be up to 70% more transmissible.

She said: “Covid cases are rising.

“Level 4 restrictions are now in place across mainland Scotland to suppress the new strain.

“It is especially vital that we do not mix indoors with other households, including at Hogmanay.

“Please plan to bring in 2021 at home with your own household.”

The lastest daily update for Scotland showed there had been1895 new cases of Covid-19 reported

There were 14,179 new tests for Covid-19 that reported results and 14.4% of those were positive.

There were seven new reported deaths of people who have tested positive. however the Scottish Government noted that Register Offices have been closed over the public holidays.

There were 1092 people were in hospital and 65 people were in intensive care with recently confirmed Covid-19.
