SOME of the strictest lockdown measures of the Covid-19 pandemic will return to Glasgow from midnight, it has been confirmed.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon today revealed a legally enforceable stay at home message will come into effect in a bid to slow the spread of a new variant of the bug.

The move will also see schools closed for most on campus learning until the end of January and hospitality venues, including pubs and restaurants, remain shut in the toughest clamp down since the early days of the pandemic.

We asked our readers what they thought about the new measures and we were inundated with responses; from those who agreed with their need, to others who had concerns about the restrictions' impact on mental health

John McCann said: "Has to done, or we’ll lose a lot of loved ones who could have been saved."

Shirley Bradley wrote: "Not very happy and disappointed but I agree with it as it is needed. Can’t believe some people think we can continue as we are."

Angela Jones said: "Needs to be done. Unfortunately due to the fact Scotland is not yet independent we were unable to close borders and flights into country unlike places like New Zealand. Folk need to take this seriously to protect everyone in society."

Geraldine Bradley added: "What else can she [Sturgeon] do seriously? She is damned if does, damned if she doesn't."

Claire Cowan: "What needs to be done needs to be done."

Vincent Greenfield added: "Agree with it as I was in Monklands last night and my heart goes out to the hospital staff who were run off their feet and also having to deal with and console the poor relatives that were getting phone calls to get to hospital to say goodbye to their relatives.

"So I for one totally agree to this and applaude the the NHS workers."

Others made a point of urging Glaswegians to follow the new rules to ensure they aren't in place for longer than they need to be.

Coronavirus Scotland: Full 'stay at home' lockdown measures to come into effect from midnight

"I've not seen my grandkids for months and it kills me."

Anisah Ahmed said: "Take it seriously because we are just going round in circles with a lot of people thinking it's nothing major and not following rules.

"Out and about, going to peoples houses, travelling, not wearing masks or social distancing."

Kerry Walker wrote: "Annoyed that I stuck to the rules but watch people break them constantly and they don’t seem to care that’s it’s not going anywhere because they’re not listening."

William Lyon added: "Please just follow the rules until the vaccine is rolled out. If you can’t for whatever reason, then that’s fair, but if you’re actively going against the plans, then your being selfish and only thinking of yourself."

Some in the city, however, pointed to the impact the return to stricter rules could have on people's mental health.

Julie Scougal said: "Very disheartening. I know how serious this virus is but how the lockdown is affecting everyone's life is extremely detrimental to their health."

Jason Smith wrote: "I feel like mental health is going to seriously spike throughout the country."
