I've definitely got my money's worth from my Netflix and Amazon Prime subscriptions, anyway.

Over the years, our city has provided multiple backdrops for dozens of film and TV productions. 

From Hollywood movies to hit TV shows, many productions have been drawn to Glasgow due to the incredible range of architecture and unique grid street system - which allows the city to double as different eras and cities.

Here are some you can enjoy while keeping an eye out for familiar spots...

The Princess Switch: Switched Again

Starring Vanessa Hudgens, The Princess Switch: Switched Again - a sequel to The Princess Switch - became available to stream on Netflix in late November 2020. A key scene in this Christmas movie was filmed at Glasgow Cathedral.

1917 (River Clyde)

The Steven Spielberg and Sam Mendes film, 1917, hit cinema screens last year.

The city's former Govan Graving Docks at the River Clyde was used as a backdrop for the filming of the WW1 epic, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch, George MacKay and home-grown talent Richard Madden. And the setting isn't the only Glasgow link, as the film was co-written by Glaswegian screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns.

1917 recently picked up the Golden Globe for Best Picture (Drama), the BAFTA for Best Film and three Oscars including Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects.

Outlander

The hugely popular TV show, Outlander, has made stars of its cast members, as well as of Scotland’s scenery and castles.

You can enjoy some Glasgow-spotting in season five as the city has provided the backdrop for many of the fantasy-romance show’s memorable scenes.

City locations used in the latest and previous seasons include Kelvingrove Park, which doubled for Boston Park, the University of Glasgow, which doubled for Harvard University, and John Street at the City Chambers, where Claire and Frank got engaged and the medieval Glasgow Cathedral, which doubled as a 1740s Parisian, ecclesiastical hospital - L'Hôpital des Anges.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw / Fast & Furious 6 (Merchant City and Financial District)

Cars and motorbikes zoomed through the streets of the city centre and Merchant City, as Glasgow doubled as London.

The cast and crew first filmed in Glasgow in 2012 for the 6th Fast & Furious, with the city's financial district and Broomielaw area used as the location of filming for furious car-chases.

Outlaw King (University of Glasgow)

Outlaw King used a number of Glasgow locations for the filming of this epic 14th Century tale. 

The Cloisters at the University of Glasgow, which date back to 1451, were transformed into a grand banquet hall for a medieval feast for the 2018 Netflix original.

The Cry

The gripping BBC drama The Cry, which aired in autumn 2018, was filmed on both sides of the globe in Glasgow and Melbourne. 

The thriller, starring Jenna Coleman, as a new mother whose baby goes missing, included filming locations at the Gallery of Modern Art, Pollok Country Park and a Glasgow hidden gem, the Sixty Steps.

The Nest 

From the Buff Club to the City Chambers and the Botanic Gardens, BBC drama The Nest films in multiple locations across Glasgow and Helensburgh. 

Martin Compston stars as lead Dan Docherty as he and his wife Emily find out how far they are willing to go to create a family.

The surrogacy tale embroils in turmoil after 18-year-old Kaya from the other side of the tracks offers to carry their baby.

Wolrd War Z

Filming for this Hollywood blockbuster saw the staging of a dramatic crash take place right in the city centre. 

At the time, Glasgow City Council said that the film shoot was the biggest the city had ever seen.

The action-packed action horror film starring Brad Pitt tells the story of a United Nations employee who traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatens to destroy humanity itself.

Trainspotting

Trainspotting was filmed in a variety of locations around Edinburgh and Glasgow.

The Scottish classic, directed by Danny Boyle, award-winning film follows a group of heroin addicts in an economically depressed area of Edinburgh and their passage through life.

It was voted the best Scottish film of all time in a general public poll.[6] In 2017 a poll of 150 actors, directors, writers, producers and critics for Time Out magazine ranked it the tenth best British film ever.[7] A sequel, T2 Trainspotting, was released in January 2017.

Lovesick

Sitcom Lovesick was filmed in numerous locations across the city.

The show revolves around a group of English friends sharing a house in the West End and their romantic lives.

After Dylan Witter (Flynn) is diagnosed with chlamydia, he attempts to contact all of his previous sexual partners to inform them of his diagnosis.

Neds

Glasgow gang drama Neds centres on John McGill (Conor McCarron) - a teenager growing up in 1970s Glasgow. John's story follows his involvement with the city's youth culture and its impact on his development as a teenager.

Scenes were shot from Lourdes High School in Cardonald and Linn Park to depict a tale involving violent street gangs, neglectful parents, bullying teachers and a lack of positive role models in Glasgow.
