Nicola Sturgeon has led tributes to Scots singing legend Sydney Devine after he died at the age of 81.

The news was confirmed by the Pavillion Theatre in Glasgow this afternoon. 

The First Minister said his name "was once synonymous with Scottish entertainment". 

She wrote on Twitter: “So sad. For Scots of a certain vintage - which definitely includes me - the name Sydney Devine was once synonymous with Scottish entertainment. A true legend. My condolences to his loved ones.”

Scottish Labour's Monica Lennon said he would be "sorely missed". 

She added: "Sad to hear that the legendary Sydney Devine has passed away. A star of the @GlasgowPavilion and one of Scotland’s most successful entertainers, he will be sorely missed. Thoughts with his family and friends.”

Managing director of the Pavilion Theatre said: "I have worked with Sydney and the band since 1976 and have to say, I have never seen a bad performance, he was the ultimate showman and performer.

"From everyone at the Pavilion, thank you for the memories Sydney. You will never be forgotten, rest in peace."

The Gaiety Theatre in Ayr added: "We are very sad to hear of the passing of Scottish showbiz legend Sydney Devine MBE.

"A regular @AyrGaiety, he was a much-loved performer, showman and friend of the theatre."

Fans also joined in to pay tribute to the performer. 

One wrote: "This is absolutely heartbreaking news. My Mum had all of Sydney’s LPs and I remember dancing round the living room to his songs as a child. Sad loss. RIP Sydney Devine."
