A PAVILION with a café, community space and public toilets could be built in Maxwell Park under new plans.

Proposals for the centre, a car park and allotments have been submitted to Glasgow City Council.

Friends of Maxwell Park and the Pollokshields Burgh Hall Trust are behind the scheme, which would see a former council depot demolished.

A business case submitted with the application suggests the cost of the project would be around £710,000 and outlines potential funding applications.

The plans state: “The project explores the possibility of finding a new, community-based use for the now redundant council depot area in the park.

“The emerging building project includes a multi-use community space, café/events space, toilet facilities for building and park users along with supporting accommodation.

“Landscaping is also a key feature where proposals include for community allotments and a re-establishment of a closed-in park entrance to improve the parks permeability.”

There are 16 car parking spaces proposed to “alleviate significant parking issues experienced by the Pollokshields Burgh Hall when events are in progress”.

It is also proposed that the new centre could be linked to the South West Cycle Way.

WiFi would be available in the café to allow local residents to work remotely.

Friends of Maxwell Park, a charity, would own and manage the pavilion and wants to create a “self-financing and sustainable” venue.

An anchor tenant for the café could be found while local organisations could rent space in the centre to deliver services.

“A new community facility for Maxwell Park on the site of the old council storage sheds will enable Friends of Maxwell Park to better meet the needs of the local community in terms of a venue for social functions and provision of adequate, fit-for-purpose space for community organisations to meet,” the plans state.

Consultation has been held with members of the community.

“Respondents thought that while Maxwell Park was a great asset, it could be made much better with appropriate investment and imagination,” the plans add.
