AN update on the current coronavirus lockdown is expected to be revealed today.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is due to give a statement on the ongoing fight against Covid-19 to MSPs in the Scottish Parliament this afternoon.

Earlier, the Scottish Government unveiled details of how the country will move out of lockdown.

The process will begin with the easing of the current level four restrictions, before moving back to the levels system used earlier in the pandemic.

Last month Nicola Sturgeon said she was setting out the order in which the restrictions would be relaxed - but said she wanted to avoid picking "arbitrary dates".

Glasgow Times:

Ms Sturgeon said: "We know we cannot continue in lockdown indefinitely and we must plan a gradual phased return to as much normality as possible.

"We hope that more children will be able to return to school later in March. And we have published new guidance to enable an easing of restrictions on care home visiting from early March.

"Beyond that, giving people the ability to meet loved ones, initially outdoors, is a priority for easing restrictions within the current level four."

Here's what we can expect to change next.

Outdoor meetings

An easing on the restrictions on outdoor meetings could be announced by Nicola Sturgeon in her latest coronavirus update.

She has already indicated a change in the rules on outdoor meetings – which at the moment only allow for two people from two different households to get together – could be coming.

On Friday, Ms Sturgeon indicated “good progress” with the vaccination programme and the falling number of infections could mean that “greater normality is firmly on the horizon”.

She said then she was “hopeful” the Scottish Government may be able to make some “relatively minor, but I think important, changes in our ability to meet outdoors and also how young people are able to interact with their friends outdoors”.

Schools

On 15 March, the plan is to start the next phase of school pupils' return.

This includes primaries four to seven while more senior pupils will be expected to return to the classroom on a part-time basis.

Education Secretary John Swinney has said he hopes all S4 to S6 pupils can attend classes.

Outdoor non-contact group sports for 12-17 year olds are also hoped to be allowed to go ahead after this date.

Stay at home rule

From April 5, the stay at home requirement is expected to be lifted.

Places of worship are expected to be reopened from this date under restricted capacity.

Non-essential shops can also expect to resume click and collect services.

Opening of non-essential businesses

From April 26, non-essential businesses in Scotland can expect to reopen.

This includes hairdressers, cafes, restaurants, retail shops and gyms.
