A SCOTTISH mental health charity has spoken out following "damaging" comments made by Piers Morgan after he dismissed Meghan Markle's suicidal thoughts.

The Scottish Association for Mental Health has since raised concerns with ITV.

Piers, the Good Morning Britain host, ranted about the Duchess of Sussex, following an in-depth interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Meghan told Oprah that she "didn't want to be alive anymore" and admitted that she had sucidial thoughts.

But Piers hit out at her comments and stated that he "didn't believe her".

He said: "I don't believe a word she says, Meghan Markle. I wouldn't believe her if she read me a weather report."

In a statement, the Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH), said: "Anyone who shares their experience of suicidal thoughts and mental ill health should be treated with compassion and empathy.

"We were, therefore, deeply concerned about damaging comments made by Piers Morgan yesterday in response to the interview with Meghan and Harry.

"Along with charity partners we have shared our concern with ITV.

"If you or anyone you know is experiencing thoughts of suicide please reach out for support.

"There are people who stand ready to listen and support you, call Samaritans on 116 123.

"You can also visit our website which carries information on suicide, supporting someone and living with your thoughts.

ITV’s exclusive UK broadcast of Oprah With Meghan and Harry was watched by a peak audience of 12.4 million viewers last night.

A spokesperson for ITV said: “ITV is committed to mental health and wellbeing and working with our charity partners on Britain Get Talking, which is about encouraging people to talk about their mental health.

"It is very important that if anyone has suicidal thoughts that they should always speak out and be listened to."
