GLASGOW subway has now added UV santisers to all its escalator handrails.

The new UV sanitisers are designed to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission in public space and reassure passengers travelling and subway staff working on the system.

Funding for this additional hygiene safety measure came from Transport Scotland’s Public Transport Retrofit Fund administered by the Energy Saving Trust in February this year.

As well as the UV sanitisers on all escalator handrails, the funding has also enabled us to purchase two additional fogging machines for use on trains and in stations.

Subway director Antony Smith said: “The new escalator handrail UV sanitisers are deigned to wipe out 99.99 per cent of germs on the surface of a handrail. The UV LED light also blocks any source of infection from spreading by destroying the DNA of germs.

“This is an excellent addition to the measures we have already introduced in stations including hand sanitation points and additional cleaning measures and we hope this will further reassure passengers travelling with us that we are doing all we can to ensure the safest environment for travel for them and our staff.”

UV sanitising units have now been fitted across all handrails on the 30 escalators in the system.
