RESIDENTS have been evacuated from their homes following an incident at a bank in Kirkintilloch.
Police said they are currently in attendance at Santander in Cowgate following the incident in the early hours of this morning.
The Cowgate between West High Street and Catherine Street is currently closed to all vehicles and pedestrians.
Several local residents told the Glasgow Times that they believed that a robbery had taken place but Police Scotland would not confirm the nature of the incident at this stage.
A Santander spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that an incident involving our ATM took place at our Kirkintlloch branch early this morning and we are supporting the police with their investigations.
"The branch wasn’t scheduled to be open today due to the Bank Holiday, and will reopen tomorrow as usual.”
The force said a number of residents in nearby properties have been evacuated from their homes as a precaution, however, there is no threat to the wider public at this time.
The Glasgow Times has been told by one local that there are as many as 50 to 60 flats in the area but police have not provided specific numbers on the number of people evacuated.
Meanwhile, police cordoned off the area with firefighters also spotted at the scene.
Workers from the retailers within the cordon arrived at the scene to start work.
