RESIDENTS of a quiet West End street were shocked to discover their neighbourhood turned into a crime scene as murder cops probed the suspicious death of an elderly woman.
The 67-year-old was found dead in a flat at West Princes Street late on Tuesday afternoon.
Cops locked down the street from its junctions with Queen’s Crescent and St George’s Road.
One local woman described the death as “very sad” and claimed she knew the deceased as a neighbour with whom she occasionally spoke but would provide no further detail.
Another local, Tam, said: “It’s terrible, that is a shame.
“There are some right creepy characters about here at night, though.”
Some students had gathered to soak up the early afternoon sun and were casually observing the police cordon.
Forensic officers were scouring the scene yesterday afternoon and were seen bagging evidence.
The entry to the building was taped off as an added level of security for the crime scene, which is being probed by Police Scotland’s top detectives at the Major Investigations Team.
Detective Superintendent Suzie Chow is leading the investigation.
She said: “Whilst we are at the early stages of the investigation into this suspicious death, we are following up a number of lines of enquiry and I would ask anyone who has any information that could assist with our investigation to please get in touch. It is imperative that we trace whoever is responsible for this woman’s death as soon as possible.”
The area is highly populated, DS Chow added, saying she was “sure” there would be witnesses who could help the police investigation.
Superintendent Ross Allan of the Greater Glasgow Division said patrols around the Woodlands area would be ramped up. He added: “I would encourage anyone with any concerns or any information to approach these officers.”
