THREE schoolgirls were racially abused near a Glasgow school, it has been revealed.

Pollokshields Primary School sent a letter to parents that said the girls were subjected to a hate crime by a woman in her 40s in a park last week.

The Glasgow Times understands that police are currently investigating the incident after the headteacher of the school contacted them.

In a letter sent to parents, the headteacher Carol Wood said: “Racism is never acceptable, but it is even more heinous when directed at children, who have the right to feel safe in their own area and park.

“I ask that we all remain vigilant and take corporate responsibility for protecting the children in our community.

“We all have the right to follow our religion, and no one has the right to judge people by the colour of their skin, what they wear or how they choose to live their life.”

The headteacher has praised the girls for behaving in a ‘mature, polite and responsible way’ by raising the alarm.

In the letter, the headteacher also quoted the words said by Martin Luther King during his I Have a Dream Speech.

The quote said: “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin, but by the content of their character.”

The headteacher added that the famous words spoken by the civil rights leader won’t be fully realised until we all speak out against racist behaviour.

A spokeswoman for Glasgow City Council said: “This is a deplorable incident, and rightly the school has reported it to the police to be investigated.

“Our children and young people are taught about respect and tolerance, and it seems that the girls used these skills to manage this upsetting incident by disclosing the details to their parents and teachers.

“There is no place for racism in our city.”

The Glasgow Times understands that police are currently liaising with the school and the victims of the family.

Police Scotland were contacted for comment.

This latest incident comes after a recent Hate Crime Report in Scotland revealed that racial hate crimes have risen by 4% from the previous year after 3,038 charges relating to race were recorded in 2019-2020.
