A BANNED driver who led cops on a chase through the streets of Castlemilk has been jailed.
John McGinley was asked to pull over after police were drawn to the manner of his driving on Tormusk Road.
Cops activated their blue lights and klaxon, but the 44-year-old did not stop on the afternoon of September 17 last year.
He appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court for sentencing.
The court heard: “Police indicated for the accused to pullover. He accelerated quickly, failing to stop, and initiating a vehicle pursuit.
“He continued to accelerate, before turning left, and failing to slow down for speed bumps. He then accelerated hard again, failing to stop at the give way.
“He thereafter turned right at a junction and lost control of his vehicle, going through a give way and colliding with a pavement.
“He was apprehended a short distance away and informed he was under arrest.
“When he was cautioned and charged, he made the reply, ‘that was stupid, I don’t know why I did that’.
“He was conveyed to Cathcart police office.”
McGinley’s defence solicitor explained that the incident was “foolish and stupid”.
He said: “His reply to the police sums it up. It was stupid, there’s no doubt about that.
“He knows you will be looking at a custodial sentence given the offences and his previous convictions. However, I would ask you not to do that because of his personal circumstances.
“He presents as someone vulnerable. He lives, on the face of it, a quiet life with a couple of pets. He has a cat and a parrot.
“If he gets a custodial sentence, he will lose his tenancy then come out and have to start his life again. I would submit you could deal with this by letting him remain in the community.”
Sheriff Paul Brown sentenced McGinley, of Castlemilk, to 180 days in prison and disqualified him from driving for nine years and 90 days.
