GLASGOW MSPs have demanded answers over the reopening of closed city venues.

In a letter to council leader Susan Aitken, Labour representatives for the city claimed little had been done by the local authority to ally fears that vital community spaces, such as libraries and sports centres, would remain permanently shut.

Pam Duncan-Glancy, the author of the letter, which was signed by all four of the party’s Glasgow MSPs, wrote: “In April, the First Minister promised that her Government would continue to engage with the council, and said that she wanted to see all venues reopen.

“Since then, and since my election, I have received many emails from concerned residents and constituents expressing their fears over the continued closures, and the inability to identify dates when many venues will reopen and services resume.”

She asked what meetings the leader of Glasgow city council had had with the Scottish Government - whose financial support Labour said was vital for the reopening of venues - to “make the case” for the city’s venues.

A council spokesman said: “A spokesman said: “Ongoing engagement with both the Scottish and UK Governments is the subject of council decision and, as such, was determined by all members.

“However, the facts are that both the elected leadership of the council and senior officers have taken part in frequent discussions with both throughout the pandemic – with support for venues, cultural services and sport high on the agenda.

“Those talks played a significant part in securing tens of millions of pounds of additional funding from the Scottish Government to address costs incurred by the council family, but also the loss of revenue.

“In recent days, they have also been able to agree the use of significant new funding from the Scottish Government to support the opening of sports facilities.”
