A GLASGOW art student has won a prestigious UK prize for her jewellery designs inspired by her Lithuanian roots.

Brigita Bivainyte’s stunning designs earned her the Goldsmiths’ Company Award for Jewellery at New Designers 2021.

The Glasgow School of Art graduate had to dream up something that could be worn at a formal evening event post-Covid, once all restrictions have been lifted.

Glasgow Times:

Brigita, who recently completed her four-year jewellery and silversmithing course, was inspired by her native Lithuania’s cultural symbols, including wheat, amber, folk songs and costumes, to create Metamorphosis of Grain.

“Metamorphosis of Grain symbolises the link between different generations in Lithuania and how unique traditions are passed on through years,” she explained.

“The connection between me and my ancestors is depicted by links shaped as rye flowers.”

While Brigita studied in Glasgow before the pandemic, she was unable to travel due to Covid, and completed her final year at home via online teaching and support.

Anna Gordon, Head of Silversmithing and Jewellery at The Glasgow School of Art said: “We are delighted that Brigita’s work has been recognised with this prestigious award.

"The centrepiece of her collection is a stunning necklace which can be transformed and adapted to different occasions and is an ideal statement piece for a post-Covid formal event.”
