A CLEANSING victory has been declared by residents who complained of overflowing bins in the run-up to COP26.

Yesterday, the Glasgow Times shared the reaction of readers who were concerned the city wasn't fit to take centre stage as the global summit host later this year.

One tweet, which gained more than 1,000 likes, showed litter flowing onto the street from a large bin alongside the caption "right this way Mr Biden, mind your feet".

The social media post referenced US President Joe Biden's expected arrival in Glasgow to attend the event alongside his special climate envoy John Kerry.

Pope Francis and Hollywood movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger are also thought to be making appearances at the conference, which kicks off in November in a bid to tackling the growing climate crisis.

However, the issue has now been resolved after the same Twitter user showed the street had been cleared.

He wrote: "Amazing how this stuff happens once the Glasgow Times pick up a tweet."

Glasgow City Council insists our city is the right venue choice for the international meeting and insisted cleansing issues were under control.

A spokesman said: “This bin serves an address where residents have no access to a back court, which means their shared bin must be placed on the street.

“Unfortunately, this bin is frequently misused by people from other addresses and businesses seeking to off-load commercial waste.

“It is also the case that people fly-tip next to the bin rather than using a bin properly to dispose of their waste.

“In recognition of the specific circumstances at this address we service the bin every four days and it was most recently cleared as scheduled on Saturday, July 3.”
