AN INJURED man who hurled abuse and spat at police officers trying to help him was jailed for 10 months.

Francis Sullivan lashed out at officers at Glasgow’s Ibrox in a police van on May 1 this year.

The 26-year-old called police officers “c***s” and challenged them to a fight.

He then spat blood and saliva at them whole in a police cell van.

Sullivan pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner.

He also admitted assaulting police inspector Alex Beargrie by spitting on his body.

The court heard Sullivan was spotted by officers with a large bleeding gash under his eye as well as cuts to his knees and hands.

Prosecutor Kavin Ryan-Hume said: “Attempts were made to get Sullivan to his feet and seek medical attention.

“He became abusive towards police stating ‘you f*** off, you’re a f***ing c***, get to f***, take these cuffs off, I’ll punch your c*** in’.”

Sullivan was warned about his conduct before he was put in a cell van where the abuse continued.

Mr Ryan-Hume added: “Sullivan spat on the floor in the direction of inspector Beargrie and another officer’s legs.

“He was warned not to spit due to the current Covid climate.

“He didn’t stop and continued spitting at the officers with spittle landing on inspector Beargrie’s trousers.

“There was a mixture of blood and saliva due to a cut in Sullivan’s mouth.”
