TRIBUTES have been paid to "legendary" footballer Charlie Gallagher.

Celtic Football Club confirmed the news this afternoon in a statement on Twitter.

They said: "Everyone at Celtic Football Club is extremely saddened at the death of a true Celtic great, Charlie Gallagher.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Charlie's wife Mary & the entire Gallagher family.

"Rest in peace, Charlie. You'll Never Walk Alone."

Glasgow-born Gallagher made 171 appearances for Celtic.

Dumbarton Football Club paid tribute to a member of their "legendary championship-winning team of 1972."

In a statement on Twitter they said: "Charlie Gallagher 1940-2021. It is with very deep sadness that we have learned that Charlie Gallagher, a member of our legendary championship-winning team of 1972, has died.

"Our thoughts are with Charlie's family and friends at this very sad time."

Paul John Dykes, producer of 'Celtic's Smiler' documentary, posted a photo with the late Lisbon Lion whom he interviewed as part of the film.

The Celtic Trust posted a statement on Twitter following the announcement.

They said: "The thoughts and prayers of everyone at The Celtic Trust are with the Gallagher family.

"RIP Charlie Gallagher."

Paul B Lyons said: "Charlie an absolute gentleman who made my father in laws night at his birthday party.

"The man who kicked off those glory years with his famous corner kick. Rest in peace sir."
