GLASGOW'S Euro 2020 fanzone curfew has been blasted as "embarrassing" as visitors missed out on watching the trophy being lifted yesterday evening.

Jubilant punters were asked to leave the space at Glasgow Green shortly before 11pm due to the venue's licensing conditions.

Writing on Twitter, Glasgow UEFA said they were unable to stay open long enough for fans to watch the trophy being handed over to the winning side.

A statement reads: "Our license doesn’t allow us to open past 11pm so we are unable to stay open long enough to allow people to watch the EURO 2020 trophy being awarded."

Scores of football fans have since shared their dismay, dubbing the conditions as a "fail".

One person said: "Fail. A fan zone set up specifically for the Euros can't show the conclusion."

Another added: "Absolutely disgusting. Why did you not plan for this? There was always a chance it would go to penalties and therefore the time would be pushed.

"Such bad managers. Do you understand football?"

"The embarrassment is finally complete", wrote another fan.

Darren Armstrong said: "Laughing stock so we are, what an embarrassment!"

And Tom McVey said: "Utter joke that!"

The nail-biting finale saw Roberto Mancini's squad win 3-2 in penalties at Wembley Stadium.

Revellers in Glasgow congregated at George Square and in Queen's Park to fly Italian flags and celebrate Italy's triumph against England.

A UEFA EURO 2020 Glasgow Host City spokesperson said: "The Local Organising Structure and/or the host cities are responsible for the implementation of the fan zones and they must follow the rules and regulations implemented by the relevant regional/national authorities."

“We are sorry that we were unable to show the Trophy Ceremony at the conclusion of last night’s European Championship Final to those in the Fan Zone.

"Because the match went to extra time and penalties the Trophy presentation took place after the 11.00pm closing time which was a requirement of our licence and was in place to ensure consideration for local residents.

"As with all events of this nature, it is imperative that we comply with our temporary entertainment licence and follow the necessary regulations to ensure we operate safely and appropriately at all times.”
