A MAJOR South Side road is to close for 14 weeks in a move that is expected to cause chaos for drivers.

Corkerhill Road in Cardonald will be closed from Wednesday, July 21, between Mosspark Boulevard and Mosspark Drive.

The busy road will shut for pipe installation by Scottish Water.

Work was due to begin on July 6, however, it has been pushed back for unknown reasons.

A diversion route will be in place via Paisley Road West and Mosspark Drive.

However, drivers have expressed their concern at the closure of the popular street.

The road is currently a major bus route connecting the area to the likes of Silverburn, popular Paisley Road West and Glasgow city centre.

While Cardonald College, which sits on the corner of the street, could reopen its doors to students come August if coronavirus restrictions allow - prompting fears of a traffic backlog.

In a statement, Scottish Water said: "We have liaised with Glasgow City Council’s roads department when planning the road traffic management and the road closure will start during the school holidays, which should help minimise disruption at this time.

Glasgow Times:

"We apologise for any inconvenience and thank affected road users in advance for their patience and understanding."

It added: "The road closure will enable us to carry out important work to install sections of water main as part of the Glasgow Resilience Project, which involves the installation of seven miles of new pipes.

"The new mains will connect the Glasgow area’s water network and the system in Ayrshire to increase resilience and protect supplies for about one million customers.

"The new water main is being installed in the Ibrox, Mosspark, Pollok, Priesthill, Nitshill and Parkhouse areas of Glasgow."

Local access will be maintained for residents and emergency services, while footpaths will also stay open.

The project is being delivered for Scottish Water by Caledonia Water Alliance, our alliance partner and is expected to be completed in 2023.
