FRESH fruit picking has been a summer holiday tradition for families across Scotland for decades.

So, if you're stuck for a family-friendly activity during the school holidays, cute date ideas or just want to avoid the madness of a busy beach - why not give it a go?

Farms up and down the country are offering the chance to pick your own berries and with strawberries in peak season that means they are guaranteed to be sweet and juicy.

"Pick your own" is a great way to support local businesses whilst being able to tuck into a range of freshly grown Scottish produce. It really is a win-win.

Here are five farms worth the drive from Glasgow where you can pick your own:

1. Cairnie Fruit Farm, Fife

This family-run farm, near Cupar, is packed with ready-to-pick strawberries, gooseberries cherries and raspberries.

Unlike most other farms, no booking is required for Cairnie Fruit Farm - all you need to do is turn up before their last slot at 4pm.

It's a perfect place to take the kids as it boasts a mega maze, outdoor café and children’s play area too.

2. Craigie's Farm Shop and Cafe, Edinburgh

If you don't mind a drive across to the east coast, you can pick your own strawberries, cherries and apples at Craigie’s fruit farm.

The South Queensferry spot makes for a perfect family day out and even gives the kids a chance to meet some of the farm animals too.

3. East Yonderton Farm, Renfrew

Located near Glasgow Airport, East Yonderton Farm is open daily during the fruit picking season from 10am until 8pm on weekdays.

If you don't fancy taking part in the picking process, you can order fruit for collection that can be picked up instead.

The farm offers strawberries, raspberries and gooseberries, to name a few, and updates on booking slots can be found on its Facebook page.

4. Broadslap Fruit Farm, Perth and Kinross

Nestled away in the Perthshire countryside, Broadslap Fruit Farm offers the chance to pick your own fresh soft fruit, including raspberries, strawberries, gooseberries, blackcurrants and redcurrants.

This small, family-run Dunning spot also has a coffee shop, serving a range of hot and cold drinks, homemade soup, locally-made bread, scones and cakes.

5. Briarlands Farm, Stirling

Specialising in just strawberry picking, Briarlands Farm in Stirlingshire grows its strawberries inside polytunnels, on wires which are waist height, making them easy to pick.

The family fun doesn't stop there, as the Blair Drummond spot also has a café, playpark, indoor soft play and farm animals on-site.
