UPDATE: Glasgow Parnie Street fire was 'deliberate' say cops after residents were evacuated
FIREFIGHTERS spent several hours tackling a blaze within a house in the city on Friday night.
Four fire engines were sent to Parnie Street in the Trongate area of the Merchant City just after 9pm. The brave fire crew then spent hours getting the inferno under control. They left just before 1am.
The Glasgow Times has learned that house a may have been on fire in the area. It is believed no one was injured.
The incident has resulted in road closures. Glasgow City Council's roads department said Parnie Street in the Merchant City will be shut until further notice.
The local authority cited a house fire as the reason for the closure and added that Chisholm Street is restricted to local access only.
A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: "Due to an earlier house fire Parnie Street has been closed until further notice. Chisholm Street is restricted to local access only."
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman added: “We received a call at around 9.04pm last night to reports of a building fire in Parnie Street, Glasgow.
“Four appliances and a specialist resources vehicle attended.
“The last appliance left at 12.52am after the fire was extinguished.
“We are not currently aware of any casualties, and the building has been passed over to Glasgow City Council’s Building Control."
Police Scotland has been contacted for comment.
Parnie Street is home to several businesses and flats which are housed within tenement style buildings.
Earlier this month, the road was closed to allow for the filming of Indiana Jones 5.
