10 times the Glasgow Disney Store made our hearts melt...

Now the much-loved shop is about to bring the curtain down on three magical decades when it closes for good on August 11.

Here are ten marvellous moments when Disney in Glasgow melted our hearts….

1 Michelle McManus brought some sunshine into the shop back in 2010 when she shared a joke with McKenzie Martin, aged seven, from Yoker as part of a Comic Relief project called Comedy Magic. Shoppers could win prizes for making Disney staff laugh.

2 Did you queue overnight to snap up a Buzz Lightyear toy in 1996? The Glasgow Disney Store had practically the last batch in Scotland, and desperate parents and Toy Story fans camped out in the early hours to bag theirs. A ‘secret shipment of up to 1000’ had been scheduled to arrive on Christmas Eve, and parents just needed to get in first to get one.

3 Looking very unlike her screen alter ego Isa from Still Game, Jane McCarry was on top form when she helped launch a storywriting competition at the Disney Store. The winner would have their story printed in a book. Jane had her own ideas for a good Glasgow take on Pooh’s adventures. “I think I’d definitely take Winnie and his friends doon the Clyde on a boat,” she said.

4 Janey Godley is better known now as no-holds-barred stand-up, writer and performer, but back in 2010, she was a Disney ambassador. Here she is telling Giffnock teacher Emma Taylor she won the Glasgow heat of the aforementioned Winnie the Pooh Laureate competition. Emma was up for the UK title after impressing Disney Store judges with her story about the famous bear set in Rouken Glen Park.

5 Even Old Firm footballers loved a bit of Disney schmaltz. Here are Lukasz Zaluska and Glenn Loovens, with their show-stealing kids Marcus and Ambra, both four, at the big shop redesign in 2010.

6 Talking of stealing the show, here’s little Nina Jamieson, aged two, who won everyone’s hearts when she met Mickey and Minnie.

7 Maisie, 8, and Betsy, 5, daughters of Taggart star Colin McCredie were the most adorable children in town when they posted their letters to Santa at the Disney Store. It was part of the launch event for the company’s Share in the Magic campaign.

8 Helping families keep their children safe online was the aim of a special event held at the Disney Store in 2011. It got the thumbs-up from (left to right) Tyler Templeton, four, from Cumbernauld, Ella Cormack, four, from Inverness, Ruth Allen, five, from Old Kilpatrick and Robert Rarity, four, from Priesthill.

9 Glasgow’s favourite shop made everyone feel a bit warm and fuzzy inside when it launched its Christmas Magical Giving Tree appeal in 2009. Working in collaboration with The Salvation Army, it encouraged customers to donate £5 to ‘sponsor’ a toy worth £15 which would be given to a child in need.

10 The day Disney transformed its Glasgow store into a proper Magic Kingdom was a happy day for little princesses everywhere. It was only the second shop in Scotland to face the hi-tech makeover after Aberdeen, and the seventh in Europe, and work lasted four months. There were 13ft virtual trees brought to life with Disney animation, a blue ‘pixie dust’ trail on the floor, a big Disney princess castle where Belle, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and Tiana appeared to tell short stories to children who summon them using magic wands. Every day a different child was chosen to perform the ‘opening ceremony’, just like the theme parks. “We want to celebrate every day,” said the unfailingly cheerful Disney spokesperson.
