PLANS to build three blocks of flats on disused land at Strathaven Golf Course have been approved by councillors.
Work can now get under way on the three-storey blocks on land behind Cloverhill Gardens which are used to house equipment sheds for the golf club.
Despite a “significant design change” by developers Abbey Construction, 36 objections to the proposals were made.

Planning and building standards manager Tina Meikle told South Lanarkshire Council’s planning committee on Tuesday, August 10, that plans had been scaled back from 22 flats in total to 18 and that a contemporary design would be used.
She added that a “20m buffer” of heavy screening would remain between the development and the nearest houses.
The 18 flats will overlook the golf course to the rear and enough parking will be provided at the front for two cars per flat.
Ms Meikle said: “The site comprises surplus land that the golf club has to the east of the car park.
“It is currently unkempt and overgrown and there are some old equipment sheds on it.
“The applicants are seeking planning permission for a flatted development of 18 units and that is three three-storey blocks.
“There is also parking for 36 cars.”

Most of the site is contained within the Strathaven urban area and has been identified for as suitable for housing for “a number of years”.
A small part of the site is located within the greenbelt but the council were satisfied the proposals wouldn’t have an adverse impact.
Ms Meikle added: “We did receive a number of representations at the outset and 28 letters in total were received.
“Thereafter, there was a significant design change and a further 18 letters of representation were received, some of them from the same authors.
“Some of the main issues related to access and traffic issues however, our own roads colleagues are happy with the arrangement.
“We are happy that the design is a bespoke design for the location.
“The small area that would be within the greenbelt is acceptable. It is mainly landscaped ground.
“We are happy recommend approval subject to the conditions attached.”
