A landmark Glasgow gas holder near Ibrox stadium is set to be demolished.

The gas holding tank  in Helen Street, which sits beside the M8, is no longer needed.

The huge container was previously used for storing gas, which is now commonly kept in underground pipes.

Gasholder owner SGN submitted prior notification to Glasgow City Council to  tear down the unlisted urban hulk in the city. 

The firm intends to give more details on the demolition works to the council after a contractor is hired and a detailed site assessment undertaken.

It said the demolition is not urgently necessary for health and safety reasons.

Energy regulator Ofgem requires all gasholders across the UK to be dismantled by 2029.

A document lodged with the council said: “SGN are applying a consistent approach to the demolition of a number of redundant gas holders across their estate.”

The document requested written notice from the council that prior approval is not needed for the works and the demolition “constitutes permitted development.”

Work to demolish structures at Provan gasworks in the north east of the city kicked off last year. 

Contractor DSM who carried out the demolition said 5,000 tonnes of steel were removed during the process and sent for recycling.

Two renowned gas holder frames have been preserved at Provan after they were awarded category B listed status. But certain parts of the structures including tanks were to be removed. 

Historic Environment Scotland describes the No 1 and No 2 gasholders as “the largest ever built in Scotland” and a “regional landmark.”

They were constructed in 1903. 

It describes Provan Gasworks as “a highly significant industrial site for the production of gas in Scotland and the surviving historic buildings are an important reminder of an industrial process that is now largely redundant.”

SGN owns 110 gas holders in Scotland and southern England.
