A couple who won a 'life-changing' sum of money were told of their big win just two weeks after receiving devastating news about their dying mum.

Gary Summers and his wife Lesley, from Greenock, received a knock on the door last week from Postcode Lottery bosses to tell them Gary had landed £60,000 as he plays two tickets in the draw.

The news came just a fortnight after his mother-in-law Margaret Bruce received a devastating diagnosis from medics that her cancer had spread.

Now the NHS key workers, who are parents to four-year-old Sienna, are making plan for the family to enjoy their winnings to the full.

Gary, 33, told our sister title The Greenock Telegraph: "We received a phone call telling us we'd won something and that it'd be a minimum of £1,000.

"We play two tickets, so we immediately thought £2,000 would help us give Sienna an amazing Christmas.

"It was such a shock to find out how much we actually won, I couldn't believe it.

"It has come at such a good time for us after our bad news about Margaret's health"

Gary, who is a porter and Lesley who is a nurse at Inverclyde Royal Hospital, say the news was a welcome boost after the devastating news about 65-year-old Margaret.

Lesley, 36, said: "My mum moved in with us after she was diagnosed with cancer two years ago. We've been doing our best then earlier this month we received the awful news that it has now spread.

"This win has been a boost for us all - it really has given us such a lift during a really difficult time.

"My mum is delighted and this gives us a chance to do things as a family and make some special memories together for Sienna.

"As soon as we can we are hopefully going to fly out to Disney World in Florida. It'll be a once in a lifetime holiday for us and this money has made it possible.

"It is truly life-changing for us as a family."

Gary was one of 10 lucky lotto winners across Inverclyde who scooped a share of almost £400,000 last week.

As well as six of his neighbours who shared in the windfall as lucky postcode PA16 0QX came up, three families in Port Glasgow were also quid's in.

Gary added: "We feel really lucky, this money will do so much for us.

"It's made our year."
