COMEDIAN Janey Godley has issued a second apology in two days after a website revealed her “racist” historic tweets.
Godley, who is currently fronting a Scottish Government Covid guidance video on social media and television, was alleged to have made a series of posts about black celebrities between 2011 and 2016.
Yesterday Godley came under fire for language used about disabled people and insults to victims of the Chernobyl disaster used in historic tweets.
Amid the row, a Tory MSP wrote to Aberdeen Performing Arts regarding her suitability to appear in an upcoming production of Beauty and the Beast, but the organisation said it would be standing by her.
Today the American news website The Daily Beast presented alleged posts about Kelly Rowland, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg and others. They claimed Godley called Rowland “that horsey face black wummin on Xfactor” and said if she “talks like a ghetto blaster racist black chick am gonna punch her rice and peas”.
The site also alleged she tweeted: “Kelly does speak like the stereotyped black Aunt Jemima who stands on a stool in the Tom & Jerry cartoons screaming ‘TOM TOM.”
This afternoon Godley responded to the allegations contained in the article.
“I thought being an outspoken comedian meant I could get away with saying anything I wanted and people would accept that and wouldn’t take it out of context, but that’s completely wrong,” she said in a statement.
“I have to stand up and own my offensive hurtful language and apologise, they have terrible, horrific undertones and I deserve all the criticism that comes my way.
“If I can’t own the shame of these words I would be disingenuous to everyone who supported me. I am sorry to everyone I hurt.”
