NEW data published by Glasgow City Council has revealed the "huge impact" of the pandemic on footfall in the city centre.

The number of people visiting the city fell from 57 million in 2019 to 28 million last year.

Trends and patterns have been identified by GCC using new open data.

The pattern of change mirrors lockdowns with dips in Spring 2020, late Autumn 2020, and January of this year.

In contrast, there were significant jumps in the number of people returning to Glasgow in both July 2020 and May 2021 when restrictions were lifted around hospitality, leisure, and retail.

Where are the busiest areas in the city?

Data from 2019 shows that Sauchiehall Street, Argyll Street, and Buchanan Street are the busiest areas, with between three and five million people a month across the three main streets.

What is the busiest month of the year?

December sees the most footfall during the year followed by the summer months of July-September.

In contrast, January is the quietest month.

What is the busiest day?

When the working week is over people flock to the city on Saturdays with the peak visiting hours between 12pm-2pm.

During the week footfall peaks between 7am-9am and again in the evening between 4pm-6pm.

Glasgow City Council notes that nighttime 'business' - between the hours of 7pm and midnight - is an important part of the city's economy.

The warmer summer months of June and July are usually the busiest for evening footfall followed by September.

December also sees a boost in the number of people visiting the city due to the festive season.
