Ministers have said that there "is no shortage of fuel" as some petrol stations around the UK closed over the weekend due to problems linked with distribution. 

An ongoing shortage of HVG drivers has led to fuel shortages at some petrol stations. 

However, despite a number of closures, there is no fuel shortage in Britain with Scotland's deputy first minister John Swinney confirming there is an "adequate supply of fuel to meet normal demand".

Meanwhile, UK transport secretary Grant Shapps urged people to be "sensible" when filling up their tanks and only doing so when necessary. 

Supermarkets including Sainsbury's reported a surge in demand for fuel in recent days, while Asda introduced a £30 limit adding it had "good levels" of fuel. 

It comes as the UK government is reportedly considering relaxing rules on immigration to allow more foreign lorry drivers to work in Britain to help deal with the shortage of drivers impacting numerous sectors.
