HOSPITAL staff in Glasgow must not be hindered from doing their jobs during a climate change summit in the city, an MSP has warned.
Dr Sandesh Gulhane, who is also a GP, has said medics can't be stopped from getting to work by possible transport chaos as he called for special measures to be put in place amid rising Covid cases.
The Tory MSP's warning comes amid plans to close roads across the city for the COP26 conference and the likelihood rail workers will be on strike during the major event. World leaders - including President Joe Biden - and thousands of delegates are due to be in town from October 31 until November 15.
Dr Gulhane said: “It is fantastic that the UK Government are going to be hosting COP26 in Glasgow. The summit has the potential to be a huge success in tackling our climate emergency.
“However, it cannot come at the price of significantly disrupting people and businesses across Glasgow.
"Many constituents have voiced concerns to me about the impact road closures and train strikes will have on their daily routines.
“My colleagues at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Royal Infirmary cannot be stopped from easily getting to work, given the current crisis in our NHS.
Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and the Queen: Who are the world leaders coming to Glasgow for COP26?
"Measures must be in place to keep traffic moving freely at all times on major routes."
As we have told previously major road closures will include the Clydeside Expressway, which is due to shut for three weeks from tomorrow (Saturday). This comes amid plans to shut several schools in the city for a number of days during the conference and also close culture hubs.
Dr Gulhane added: “We must also see an urgent public awareness campaign so Glaswegians are fully aware of how the city will be affected by COP26. I am willing to work with all parties to ensure COP26 runs smoothly for those living and working in the city.”
The Glasgow Times contacted NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, the Scottish Government, Glasgow City Council, and COP26 organisers for comment this afternoon. None responded.
