AN EMPTY Sainsbury’s store in the city centre has become a headache for those living nearby due to a “constant” alarm and glaring lights.

Lights can still be seen shining at the site on Sauchiehall Street, which has been closed for around a year.

While an alarm goes off “every few hours” throughout the day causing a “serious annoyance” for residents, businesses, and shoppers alike.

Helen Scott, who recently moved into a flat near the site, said: “At first, I thought it was a car alarm and I was saying to my partner that someone really needed to get their car sorted, but my neighbours told me it was the old Sainsbury’s.

“I didn’t really believe that it would be just left to go off all the time but all it takes is a short walk along Sauchiehall Street and you can see for yourself.

“I’m still working from home so there’s no escaping it. It’s embarrassing to have COP26 down the road and yet we can’t even switch off an alarm.”

There are dozens of social media posts regarding the shop, branding it a “nuisance” and a “pain” while others wondered why it wasn’t being inspected to ensure these issues were corrected.

Glasgow photographer Sobhan Sheikh, who wows more than 1000 followers with images of the city, shared a photo of the lit-up shop stating: “Can some [one] find out how to turn off the lights in the old Sainsbury’s on Sauchiehall Street?

“They have been on since the place shut a couple of years ago and it’s doing my nut in.”

It’s understood the lights have not been left on but there is a fault causing them to turn on which is being rectified.

HSA Retail, which has been placed in charge of finding a new tenant for the site, confirmed it was aware of the problem after receiving complaints from residents.

A spokesperson for the firm said it had passed on the information to the supermarket chain, which is understood to have hired a management firm to care for the site while the lease tenure runs out.

It’s not clear which management firm has been brought on to tackle the problem, however, HSA Retail insisted it would contact Sainsbury’s once again in a bid to speed up action at the site.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s said: “We have introduced additional monitoring for this vacant site to prevent further disruption to our neighbours in the area. We’re sorry for the inconvenience this has caused.”
