CUMBERNAULD residents have been warned not to set off fireworks this Bonfire Night following a major gas leak.

We previously reported that SGN is currently repairing a broken gas pipe in Lye Brae, Kildrum, but have said it's too early to say when work will be complete.

The road has been closed in both directions.

Residents in the shaded area below are now being warned NOT to set off fireworks tonight.

Glasgow Times:

A statement on SGN's website read: "We understand there may be a number of firework displays planned for today and this evening, if you live within the exclusion zone shown on the map, it's really important that no fireworks are set off for safety reasons. We're really sorry for the inconvenience this will cause."

Nearby residents have told how there has been a very strong smell of the substance - even within homes.

SGN previously warned those residents not to smoke or use electrical switches if they smell gas in their property, or if they have a gas safety concern.

A statement went on to say: "We’d like to reassure the local community that our gas network remains safe and there is no risk to their safety.

"We’re aware this has caused a smell of gas across the local area but despite this, we would always recommend if anyone can smell gas or has any safety concerns, they should call the National Gas Emergency Number on 0800 111 999.

"We'll update you on our progress later today."
