Thai is always an easy choice when you want to have options for everyone. From a multitude of vegan options to classic Thai dishes, it is a crowd-pleaser.
That is why on a very rainy Monday we decided to try out Glasgow’s newest city centre Thai restaurant. I have been meaning to try out Ting Thai Caravan in Glasgow ever since noticing the venue pop up on West Nile Street.
Having had some amazing Thai’s in Glasgow, we wanted to give their menu a real shot and decided to try a range of things from their menu from tofu dishes for myself to Seabass and a Thai style fried chicken for my partner.
The food was delivered very quickly, but the way it was packaged definitely stumped us at first. Ting Thai Caravan chooses to use cardboard boxes for all of its dishes – which is a great idea until you need to package up liquids.

Anything in liquid form was poured into plastic bags and tied up tightly, making them almost impossible to pour into a bowl without burning yourself. But at least that meant it was all pretty hot when delivered, right?
After I got caught in the standard Glasgow winter downpour, I was in the mood for something warm and The Tom Jaew Hed soup with mushroom and lemongrass sounded like the ideal choice. Once we did transfer it to a bowl, we both agreed the flavour was amazing. It was a lovely subtle broth that still packed in plenty of flavour from the chilli and lemongrass.
However, I regretted adding noodles to the mix which just overwhelmed the soup and made it impossible to get to the vegetables.
It didn’t matter as much to me as the Panang curry easily distracted me from the soup. The balance of flavours was everything you would want from a Thai curry while still packing in a decent amount of heat.

In the future, though, I would probably give the side of fried tofu a miss. The tofu was pretty bland and the sweet chilli sauce which came with it did not really do much to remedy that.
Meanwhile, I was informed the Khao Mun Gai Tod, or spicy chicken, was relatively average on its own but the sauce with it made up for it.
Overall, we were happy with the Thai takeaway, even though we definitely got more food than we knew what to do with but that is not a bad problem to have.
Would we order again? Yes, but we would probably stick to the curries.
